2024 US Election thread

How does a party really steal an election? Same as they did during Jim Crow. They can’t use a poll tax or a bogus written test anymore. So they found other ways.

Think of all the states where they purged the voter rolls in traditionally Democratic-leaning areas, but INSISTED that you’ll be fine because you can just get a provisional ballot.

Some “big picture” numbers:

Add the broken electoral college to this mix, and any Democrat would need to win by a lot more than 1-2% to actually win.
the absurdity of the US system is that if the rejection rate is so high, it should be mandatory (and non-partisan priority) to fix the systematic issues that lead to rejection. in 2024 these weren't so insurmountable issues.

They intentionally made these issues worse. Voter ID, restrictions on ballots, technicalities to easily disqualify ballots, purging voter rolls, bogus citizen challenges to registrations, and more are all meant to suppress the vote. It would be really easy to fix all these problems. However, the GOP sees them as features instead of bugs. Voting by certain people is what they want to prevent. And they are doing a pretty decent job at it,

Let’s not forget a recent SCOTUS ruling either. Voting rights challenges can no longer be brough by voters; they can only be brought by the DOJ. How many challenges to racist gerrymandering and other discriminatory practices do you believe the Trump DOJ will bring to court?

Also, the po-po reform protest voters, can join the party with the pro-palestine-protest voters.

One can hope that Trump and Rubio don't get into a super-hawkish feedback loop re China that can't be modified by pro-trade advisors and Congressional interests. Rubio is better informed and less deranged but he serves at Trump's pleasure and will be kept aware of that by the anti-trade cohort in the West Wing and by Trump himself.
Compared to the other picks, Rubio is the most reasonable cabinet member. Well…

He is stopping all foreign aid immediately… although there were 2 exceptions:

Israel and Egypt are among the top recipients of U.S. foreign aid. Israel receives roughly $3.3 billion annually in U.S. assistance. Egypt receives about $1.5 billion each year.

We already know why Israel is exempt, but in case you forgot why Egypt might be getting special treatment…

One thing that keeps me thinking. The new, ""definition"" of binary sex, does more to declare zygotic personhood than defining sex. Ergo it is a very very very clear indicator that they are planning on a national abortion ban. Which takes me to all the lying on record. When you elect blatant liars, you give approval to not adhering to the campaign promises.

Trump said he wouldn’t get involved in foreign wars?

WASHINGTON, Feb 1 (Reuters) - U.S. forces carried out airstrikes in Somalia on Saturday targeting a senior Islamic State attack planner and other members of the militant group, killing many of them, President Donald Trump said.
"These killers, who we found hiding in caves, threatened the United States and our Allies," Trump said in a post on Truth Social.
"The strikes destroyed the caves they live in, and killed many terrorists without, in any way, harming civilians."
Sure, no civilians were hurt… There’s no way that is true, but Trump lies and good luck checking those details from Somalia.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not projecting any self awareness or insight onto trumpists. But cruelty is the point and cruelty by incompetence is waaaaay too abstract for these folks to elicit joy.

Speaking of cruelty... Philadelphia Inquirer reports incidents of impersonation of ICE agents in Pennsylvania. Yeah, this was gonna happen, even if impersonating an ICE agent is a federal crime. Ignorance, incompetence AND cruelty.

One incident was about some Temple University students harassing a bakery. They've been suspended and one of them was arrested.
Another recurring incident is about someone who's been driving around Chester County agricultural regions in a vehicle with fake ICE stickers, purporting to be from "ICE Volunteer Corps," a nonexistent entity.

Of course there have also long been scams where people impersonating ICE have offered to "help" undocumented workers get green cards or stays of their deportation for like $10k a pop.

The LA Times has reported on a number of such ripoffs. The really awful thing there is that refugees officially released under protection in the USA --pending adjudication of their asylum claim or during a TPS (a specific group's temporary protection status grant)-- can end up trying to get good paperwork sooner but instead get caught up in a scam that reveals undocumented employment, giving ICE a reason to deport them as criminals, which makes them ineligible to re-enter the USA and may endanger their lives when they are returned to country of origin.

This guy cuts to the chase on how we got to the point of turning Gitmo into a concentration camp, threatening Panama and Greenland, planning to nuke and pave Gaza, and letting a South African weirdo steal everybody’s social security checks.

Is this for real?

Seriously?

Ms Harris accepted defeat gracefully, and did not attempt to mount a coup d'état following her defeat.

Nowhere in her platform did she state that she would withdraw the US from the WHO, abolish USAID (a force for good and a source of soft power), threaten Panama, Mexico, Canada, Denmark and Greenland, gut government departments, threaten to abolish the (federal) Department of Education, witlessly (and outrageously) surrender the details of federal government personnel and payroll to a bunch of unelected, unaccountable, unqualified, affluent young white men for whom women, people of colour and the poor are all viewed with corrosive contempt.....

....and, as for Gaza....

well, on the subject of Gaza, I don't recall Ms Harris suggesting that the area be "ethnically cleansed" of its inhabitants for whom exile and expulsion are deemed acceptable courses of action in the eyes of the current appalling and ethics-free administration.

These posts have been pretty consistent, unfortunately. I've expressed my opinion about this pretty early on, way before the election. I don't see how the "single-issue gaza voters" demonstrate politically meaningful leverage and without leverage, nobody will take your cohort seriously. NOBODY.
So on one hand, it wasn't only about third party voting since a significant chunk went straight to vote for trump (see below). Punishing the candidate on whom you still have some leverage on by voting for the candidate who has a track record of being worse for your cause and you have ZERO influence on isn't how you demonstrate or maintain leverage. So we now have a movement with a track record of going great lengths to demoralize Democratic voters, and these effort go on way past the election. In the meantime they offer NOTHING nominal on how to handle the trump admin, only doubling down on fucking stupid. I still have yet to learn how this will enhance the empathy for the Palestinian cause.

Ohh and what we are getting at this very moment is "the better handling of the Middle East" people considered:

How do you like them apples eggs?
The price range is $4.79-5.79/dozen for large at the local Kroger here in Central Virginia. If you shop super early. Got up super late and prepared a list for Sunday am shopping and saw a notice of 2 carton limit for all eggs. Most are out of stock except for large quantities: 30 or 60 ct. Lots of people shop biweekly or monthly, so it's not unheard of seeing some buying 60-120 eggs at a time.

I recall a special for ~$3.29/dozen pre-election. Even cheaper for members under certain plans.

It is beyond ridiculous for anybody to drag Harris at this point.

Are those doing so looking to excuse their part in re-electing Trump?

Maybe for some, it’s a bonus that they get to disparage a woman of color.

Either way, this is the find out phase. One could blame the woman they refused to vote for. Or they could engage in some self-reflection.

In the end, we are all stuck now, whether we acted wisely or foolishly. I just hope that those who acted foolishly will learn something from this and not make the same mistake again… if there IS another election.

Yup, we have trump here being absolutely lawless, yet Harris' still catching flack for not being flawless. Madness.

If you were wondering… was it really the expensive eggs that led people to vote for Trump? If so, with eggs even more expensive, people must be unhappy with him, right? …. RIGHT?

Overall, 47% of U.S. adults approve of how Trump is handling his job as president

People voted FOR the racism; basically everything he’s done so far (that made the news) was about punishing minorities. We are well and truly f-ed as a nation if half the country thinks he is doing a good job. Will 10% unemployment be enough for people to sour on this bigot? 15%? Who knows. But just know that half of America think this is what doing a “good job” looks like!

🤦‍♀️

we are literally 3 weeks in. It's entirely meaningless. Remember when people angrily telling us how they are leaving the GOP after Jan 6. Well 4 years later they went and voted the same way. I.e. you can have a literal failed coup d'état in the first week of presidency and it will have zero consequence for the election outcomes
