Film A Movie Thread

Bladerunner 1982, The Final Cut Edition. What qualifies as human? Could a human fall in love with an AI that displayed empathy, affection, and dismay especially with a human form…in a heart beat.

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off (the) shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die.

I just rewatched "The Batman", and with all respect to those who love the Tim Burton and Christopher Nolan versions (that includes me), I think this is the finest Batman film ever made.
I just watched it; it was really good!

Have you read the book? I pretty much love all the versions of the movie, for different reasons, of course.

I did read “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” The movie is based on this ecosystem, but it’s a different story.

Blade Runner 2049 (2017)
The world is built on a wall between kind. Tell either side there is no wall and then you have a war or a slaughter.

Wallace: “We lost our stomach for slaves unless engineered.”
The newborn scene is heartbreakingly brutal.

There’s a revolution coming, we’re building an army.
What will the third chaper bring? (2025) Another 50 years, in the timeline? Maybe I should not be holding my breath regarding a timely revolution, but who knows?

"Salem's Lot" (1979)

I recently bought the DVD of this in anticipation of the new one. From the reviews, however, it doesn't sound like the new one is worth subscribing to Max for.

So I watched the old one instead, and holy $#!+ it was better than I remembered. Nice camera moves for a late 1970s TV movie. The only thing I wasn't crazy about was Harry Sukman's score, which is a little too strident and TV-like for me.

OTOH, it's a great story, adapted well. And no one who has ever seen "Salem's Lot" could forget this little scene, where an innocent little kid turned vampire comes floating in the window.

Yesterday my Batman/horror movie aficionado grandson and I watched "Evil Dead II".

He's a complainer about hokey acting and bad special/practical effects, so I warned him this was going to be a really cheesy movie.

Turns out he found the cheese very appealing.

Ideally he wanted to start with the original "Evil Dead", but that seems to be only available on pay channels. Luckily, "Evil Dead II" is largely a remake of "Evil Dead". I'm not sure why, but it worked out fine for us.

I didn't remember it this way, but for a movie that's got so much action in it and is less than an hour and a half in length...it seemed to drag by the end.

It was, however, the antithesis of "Salem's Lot". That story took itself very seriously. This movie didn't take itself seriously at all.

Red Sparrow (2018)- This is an excellent spy thriller, very different than Atomic Blond, lower energy, slower burn, more traditional, a lot of classical music instead of heart pounding 80s rock, but never the less tense and excellent. I read the trilogy which takes the reader to the top of the Russian government.

2018? Yikes, time flies! I was fortunate enough to see it on the big screen back then without knowing anything at all about it. My sister had picked the movie and bought us fancy VIP seat tickets.

Wonder if it is on any streaming service I have access to…

The School for Good and Evil (2022)- Mediocre Disney-like fairy tale story. Not sure what its point was.

Transformers (2007)- The first and arguably the best of the franchise. A well defined and executed story about a conflict involving opposing groups of alien AI come to Earth with a high humor quotient. Definitely a Michael Bay high energy production. The integration of CGI into live action is impressive almost 2 decades later.

Amazing Mechanics 🙂

I mentioned to my wife that ever since I saw "Joker 2", the song "If My Friends Could See Me Now" has been running through my mind...and she said she wasn't familiar with it.

So I sang a couple bars to stir her recollection:

If they could see me now/
that old gang of mine/
I'm eating fancy chow/
and drinking fancy wine...

Nope. Didn't ring a bell.

How is that even possible? 🤷‍♂️

Sleepy Hollow (1999)- A perfect modern Halloween classic. The Iron Maiden scene happens during a flashback, gives me chills an event the character experienced as a child, perfectly horrible.

I haven’t seen the most recent movies in the franchise but I am inclined to agree that the first one was the best one. I am not entirely fond of the visual style they chose for the robots (or their transformations) but they executed it very well.

Can’t complain about Shia LaBeouf’s Sam Witwicky, annoying and embarrassing character, just right for the story told. Peter Cullen is naturally flawless as Optimus Prime’s voice, and Megan Fox is absolutely stunning. I would have preferred to be able to say something more than that about her performance as Mikaela Banes but I haven’t seen the movie since I was a young warthog and that car scene was … distracting. Didn’t help seeing all the posters year in, year out either. 😅

Still, overall I think I prefer the prequel Bumblebee (2018). The main franchise would have been better off using that style.

If you want a clear understanding of just how different the same story can be told differently watch The Long Hot Summer 1958 vs 1985. No competition imo. 🙂

I was always interested to see what Jason Robards would make of a character, and I'd not seen this 1985 remake. Gonna give it a shot on Amazon's Freevee, if I can manage to squelch my annoyance over the ads. Thanks!
