Film A Movie Thread

Operation Petticoat (1959)- Loved this as a kid, watched it this afternoon, and the image on our large screen TV was horrid. It’s possible they are streaming a VHS version, definitely not remastered. 🙁 WWII story semi-comedic about the adventures of sub crew and a pink submarine, well before The Beatles Yellow Submarine. 🙂

I finally got to see “Civil War” (Max) which I can summarize most simply as being as depressing as “Platoon”, the only difference being the protagonists are journalists and are on domestic soil.

I know the movie came out well in advance of the election, but seeing it now though, after the election, I’m coming realize it might be a preferable outcome compared to living the rest of our lives under MAGA one-party rule.

I came across this the other day and watched it for the first time. It was enjoyable.

I know there were other influences for McHale’s Navy, but I have to believe this was one of them. Tony Curtis‘s character is a lot like Lester Gruber, the scheming, conniving member of McHale‘s crew. And Cary Grant resembles, a bit, Commander McHale, who was perpetually flustered by the situations going on around him.

Tony Curtis reminds me of Jack Lemon’s character in Mr Roberts.. 🙂

Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle (2017)- I’ve recently come around to this version, even though it’s not as good as the 1995 version, but at least I can tolerate it now. 🙂 The original 1995 movie takes place in this world, while 2017 takes place in the game world, “in the jungle you will wait” (?), and is technically a sequel as references to Alan Parrish, the character from the original movie are made.

Harvey (1950)- A charming story about a pleasant man (Jimmy Stewart) who has a friend, a large invisible white rabbit, that he keeps company with, that mostly he sees, but others do too on occasion. The story is brilliantly told. I felt emotional when:
Stewart’s older sister has a panic attack, because she realizes she does not want him to be changed by a drug injection at an insane asylum.

Jumanji: The Next Level (2019)- It’s ok. A sequel is planned for 2026.

The Green Mile (1999)- Amazing mystical story telling, a Stephen King Masterpiece. This movie touches me emotionally. There are some horrible scenes to watch in this story, but there is at least one miraculous occurrence that makes up for it.

Gladiator II (2024). Faint echo of the original, would most likely have been less harshly judged as a standalone movie. It would be trivial to make a fake trailer to frame the movie as a parody mocking the first one, just saying...

Paul Mescal failed to carry the movie. Pedro Pascal did what he could but felt out of place. Denzel Washington and Connie Nielsen on the other hand were worth watching.

Defiance (2008)- WWII, ‘Jewish brothers in German-occupied Eastern Europe escape into a Belorussian forest, where they join Russian resistance fighters, and endeavor to build a village, in order to protect themselves and about one thousand Jewish non-combatants’. Excellent story.

Toy Story 2 (1999)- Toy Story put Pixar on the map. Toy Story 2 is just as wonderful with a touch of horror as Stinky Pete ends up wearing lip stick. ☺️

Just for shits and grins I streamed "Mary Poppins". The comedy bits are cute, the songs are definitely magical (by the Sherman brothers, of course)...but I didn't remember it being so darn long. It seemed to take forever to get to the end of that movie. If they were making it today, I'd suggest throwing out three or four of the lesser songs to shorten it. " But not "Chim Chim Cheree", "Feed the Birds" and all the other true classics.

Then, you are not "practically perfect in every way..."

The Children’s Train (2024)- Netflix. Surprisingly powerful story of a boy in post WWll Italy whose mother living in poverty in Naples, volunteers to send him North (along with hundreds of other children), to families who want to provide them with a normal life, even if it is just for a while. For me, an emotional ending.
