How about this weather?

Drought conditions in the Northeast kinda sneak up on us sometimes. Often that's because government agencies issue a "drought watch" alert before the later "drought warning." The latter condition can trigger municipal water usage restrictions, and people tend not to notice before then since a "watch" status doesn't keep you from watering lawns or washing vehicles etc.
My twin in Rockland County, NY just received a Red Flag warning, saying they're in a serious drought situation. He said he wasn't really paying attention due to the Presidential (and local) election.

It's actually raining today, I'm so happy 🥹

I'm glad I don't have to come into work today on account of Veterans Day. Going to be mostly reading and listening to classical music.

The long autumn of 2024 has departed. Weather gods found a spare foot and a half of snow and dumped it on us Thursday into Friday. Guess the snow plow guy hustled to get the blade onto his truck because he had my drives plowed by mid afternoon on Friday. So, glaciers abound now at the ends of my driveways.

We lost power just before midnight Thursday and got it back just at the end of Friday, around 11:30pm. Internet service showed up about an hour later. WiFi calling and texting work but no landline service yet. Means service in next town over still doesn't have power, since that's where the fiberoptic piece of our landline phones gets power. PITA since before they "upgraded" service in that manner, at least our landlines worked during a power outage. Naturally they didn't bother extending fiberoptics out here for high speed broadband.

Like a fool after turning on the kitchen light and discovering it worked, I brewed coffee. Hah. Three a.m. now and finally starting to yawn.

We’ve had heavy or light rain, mostly the latter, for 24 hours, enough that the ground is saturated and soggy.

And as we mentioned in the NFL thread, the Browns-Steelers game went from clear to winter whiteout in the space of two quarters.

If you stayed up to watch the postgame, though, you got to see Jameis Winston and the postgame panel laying down on the snowy field and making snow angels. 😂

We didn’t get that much snow, plus the ground was still kinda warm, so it didn’t stick around much.

Snow angels, sí !! Always the temptation returns after the first decent snowfall, even if I sensibly enough resist that at my age.

"Turkey Day" indeed! We're halfway through a winter storm warning that continues to 10pm tonight. Heavy wet snow and so far about six inches have landed right around here. Interesting, since earlier the total was forecast to be six inches but it looks like just getting started, can't see there's a road out there at the moment. I had plans for a fancy stir fry (we celebrate winter holidays in April in my family lol), but my backup plan now features apples, peanut butter... the usual power blackout fare! 😋😖

Calls to mind a song with lyric "here comes another one just like the other one" -- think it's a Jack Johnson offering. Anyway that's how the overworked utility crews must feel since they're still trying to clear the last of our county's power outages from last week's storm. Grateful for shelter and food, feel badly for the plow crews and linesmen looking at really uncertain Thanksgiving festivities.

So single-digit nights have arrived. Yowza. I don't mind when they're spaced out a little more instead of piling up three and four in a row...

single digit season is here.jpeg

Snow snow snow snow snow snow snow snow snow snow snow snow snow snow snow snow snow snow snow snow snow snow snow snow snow snow snow snow snow snow snow.

Good thing it’s been light like a spring drizzle this whole time. Otherwise I’d be inundated.

And yeah, single digit temperatures.

Yep. this is like winter 2014 around here, where it was either mid-20s and snowing with wind gusts up to 50mph, or else cloudy until around dusk when it would clear off and then go to subzero temps overnight.

I've liked January the past few years because of the returning light and relatively mild winters. This year, hah, not so much. I daydream now of a February thaw and venturing out to the snail-mail box for seed catalogs, digital versions of which I already spend time perusing over coffee lately.

The whole northern half of the country is in the same boat for the next couple weeks I guess. Great for winter sports if you dress for it and are really fit. For the rest of us, time to stay hunkered down like groundhogs!

Hmm. A seven-hour power outage earlier today was not an encouraging kickoff to what is forecast to be three nights of single-digit and subzero nights, ya think? Oh well. I discovered that for lunch one can mix together some leftover long pasta and leftover tomato sauce into what can't be much worse than cold Chef Boyardee out of a can, and minus the chemicals...

Anyway now I'm happy to have heat and lights on tonight, hope the power utility can keep its baling wire and duct tape gig rolling ok for the duration of this cold snap. Next step is to recharge all the devices I used to watch downloaded purchased films or DVDs on earlier, in case it's a rinse-and-repeat situation further down the road.

Gotta love how the farthest Congress gets on a national grid updating plan is haggling over whether to subsidize renewables or fossil fuel extraction. Apparently energy transmission and storage remain a sometime thing...

Meanwhile because of the power outage earlier today and a big draw yesterday because of a pancake festival down to the church, the village water pumps did not refill the reservoir properly and the pressure is too low to get water up to the hilltop customers, so the water feed will be shut overnight after 9pm to let the refill complete. I always keep at least ten gallons of water around for such circumstances so I'm not worried, but I'm glad I'm not among those in the village who have to leave a tap dripping to keep this or that pipe from freezing when it gets really cold overnight... that drip won't be there tonight.

Bottom line: reminds me to be grateful I'm not living in Ukraine, Gaza, Sudan, North Carolina or Los Angeles...

Thanks to the Polar Vortex, in central Texas, as of Tuesday we will have had 4 nights of below freezing 3 nights of hard freezes. Monday night several inches of snow fell. You want to put Texans (at least this part of Texas) in a panic, mention snow. 😉 A couple weeks prior when it fell to about 30F briefly, my outside philodendron shook it off, but the Elephant Ear folded. Now the philly is flat too, although I covered its base with a thick layer of fabric. I suspect/hope it’s not dead. All the important potted stuff is either sitting in the kitchen on the table or the floor, or in the shed with a heat lamp going. This morning was the coldest 24F, but the high will be 47F.

This weather has lost the thread completely, WTF. Rainy, near-zero, sunny, near-zero, snow, rain [flood]...

Can I at least get a side of fries with that.

I thought about that last night. What with all the plane crashes and tariffs and bullying of government workers, I didn’t see one story about the groundhog all day. Hardly surprising.

Besides, if he’d stuck his head out for too long, Kristi Noem would have shot him.
