Increase attachment size

Default size is 1 MB. This has already been increased to 2 MB. It would be lovely to increase it further, but a bit wary, purely because it will increase costs by over 50% to go the next tier. We'll monitor the site's usage and consider this.

Edit: nearly --> over

Ok. Fair enough.

I had no idea this was the limiting factor. Thanks for letting us know. Are there any other limits we should be aware of with this tier?

400,000 page views per month in terms of bandwidth. We believe that is a threshold we won't hit for a long time and is not a concern, especially with how Xenforo works and what counts as a page view.

Just curious and in no way meant against @Runs For Fun , but why do photos shared here need to be so large? Especially if it impacts costs?

I was just trying to upload a photo I took on my phone. I didn’t really consider resizing it or anything. I also didn’t know that increasing the size limit would increase the cost of running the forum.

Gotcha. Thanks for enlightening me. I always upload from my Macbook so didn't realize what happens when uploading from your phone. There must be some kind of app to reduce file size? But it may be moot if TPTB can accommodate your request. 🙂

I am not sure about the iPhone, but I use Preview on a Mac and then scale the resolution down. You can see here https://thesnug.space/threads/spring-has-sprunged.6/post-862. (click on them for full size)

So a 4 MB picture at over 4000 x whatever resolution becomes a 1800 x whatever resolution and the result is 1 MB. I then exported them as jpeg at half quality and they are around 700 KB each and they still look good, imo.

It's not like anybody can really tell the difference on a forum, imo. Now I am curious if reducing the size is possible directly on an iPhone... looks like you can create a new automation thingie using Shortcuts. I'll muck about with it when I have some time and maybe put together a little post explaining how to use shortcuts.

Edit: I've created a little tutorial on how to use the Shortcuts app to get around this problem quickly and easily.

Yeah I found the thing about the Shortcut. I also found this app as well

I just ran into the attachment issue again posting on TS this morning, so I went to the App Store, without seeing the previous post and coincidentally picked the “Image Size” App due to the large number of likes it has, to reduce the images that comes off my iPhone XR which seem to run about 4MB. 🤗
