So, where do we go from here?

In case you hadn't heard about it already, please read theSeb's announcement about The Snug's future.

That of course raises the question: where do we go from here?

I've discussed this with theSeb and others on Discord and Slack, and there are a few options that don't involve going back to MR or TA...as if some of us even could.

Please bear with me as none of these ideas are fully formed, they are simply here for us to discuss.

1. arstechnica

theSeb describes this forum as a "well known hive of educated discussion and liberalism". I was not that familiar with it, but that sounds like a pretty accurate description.

Pros: it's got a lot of members already and it would cost us nothing to join (AFAIK). Possible cons: it's got a lot of members, so a small group like us may kind of get lost in the crowd there. Also it's got rules, regs and mods, just like MacRumors. Not that they're necessarily as capricious, but some of us have an aversion to the very idea.

2. The Snug continues under new management.

As Super King suggests at Discord, perhaps someone would want to keep the existing site and take over payment and operation of it.

Pros: everything stays the same. Cons: easier said than done--at least to me. Not all of us have the technical skills or the finances to do that. (Of course in reference to the cost of running a site, we could always try some kind of fundraising, like making this a paid membership site, for example.)

3. A similar site, under the same name.

In this scenario we'd basically try to find the most economical forum hosting solution we can, and then migrate there. I did investigate one host and, using their free trial, actually created the Snug 2.0 version, as it were, that is linked above.

Pros: it's not Xenforo, but it's similar. It sounds like it may even be able to import this existing forum, so we wouldn't lose it. From what I understand, the host, websitetoolbox, handles the technical side. You built the forum. Cons: you still have to pay for it, though it may be less expensive than some other solutions. In case you're wondering, this is what pricing looks like.

4. Discord.

Not the ideal solution, but a fallback.

Pros: ? I'm not sure how this kind of platform is funded. Cons: obviously it can't be divided into topics, threads, whatever, the way a real forum can. And some, like Scepticalscribe, have said in the past that they dislike the idea.

Please feel very free to correct me or expand on some of these thoughts. Thank you.

My apologies for being oblivious on the subject. I mentioned previously managing a Mac User forum , Miniapples in the Twin Cities where I went searching and found a free software that seemed to work well, management was not so difficult, but that was 20 years ago and my memory what it is, I’d have to do some research. As I recall one of the requirements was that people were posting on it. Maybe you could tell me what software you are looking at and I’ll see if I have some old notes. As is what date does the site expire? Ok i see 23March.

Edit: i just looked it up, and I was using iWeb which provided free hosting and the software, but it no longer seems to exist. 🙁
I’ll suppose you are looking at one on this list?

Of possible interest, I visited one of the forumotion forums and it looks good , but have no idea how it is moderated, but my point of visiting was to look at it’s functionality from the aspect of creating a new forum, which it looks good.

Btw, this site, categorically hits on all cylinders having the forum sections I’m interested besides politics.

SouprMatt and I are working on a hosting solution, and I am currently experimenting with forum software. Things are still in the formative stages so it's a bit early to go into details.
If you want any assistance, give a shout. I also think you’d want a list of emails from Seb to contact people if the intent is to keep the conversation going, not that you have not already thought of that. 🙂

Btw, I have been participating in forums since the beginning, and I do not like Discord by any means. It is ok for ingame chat, but as a forum, to easily keep track of conversations, I find it to be messy for that purpose.

Thanks for all the info! I did my own search for hosted forums and forum software, but some of what you mentioned is new to me. I'll check it out. 👍

Political Haven looks interesting, if...antiquated. (Edit: I was looking at it on desktop. Looks better on my phone.) I know when the, uh, other site was created, a number of members didn't care for the look...though the content looks good. There's also another, similar site out there that I've seen.

I registered there, looked around, made a few posts and politically as far as I can tell there is a strong MAGA influence. The categories of sub forums are outstanding, perfect for an all topics forum, but under the US Politics section a string of Right Wing posts, like “Leftists called for Nazi Hate Day” not a lot if any of pushback, but I’ve not spent enough time there to really tell. And I quickly realized that I’m not going to subject myself to a predominant conservative, especially MAGA forum environment again. And when I say again, I’m not referring to any of the forums you and I have been in together.

As far as antiquated software , I’d say yes, but it is functional. When you mark something as bold face or italics, you’ll see the bbcode pop into your sentence, but dissapears when you post. The forum software does not host images, you either supply the address of an image online, one you have one at Imgur or Photobucket. It also says you can host images from your computer, but I have no idea how that works. I can see an issue with the space that storing photos in the forum online might cause over time.

Anyway, I’m willing to assist, PM me if you need any help.

Yeah, that “Lay of the Land” poll (under US Politics), however small the sample, sure leans that way. 😄
I’m guessing most people did not want to answer and I honestly see the hesitation to label yourself in what might be an incendeary environment. The posts I made in the non politics sections, everyone’s was friendly and a lot of replies.

Sorry to see the site go. I'm proud to have been part of the start of it. Lots of great people here whom I've learned from over the many years. Like others here, I have to apologize because I've tried to take a step back but ended up getting sucked into MR again when I had the full intention of staying away from everything for half a year or so. I'm finding spending time with people and doing things in person to be far more rewarding than I remember it, now that I'm a bit older.

While I may not have seen eye to eye politically I do enjoy reading. Thank you all for the opportunity.

Please feel free to contact me if y'all are looking to start another place or what not. I'd be happy to throw a few pennies in the right direction.

Thank you theSeb for running this forum and I'm sure taking $ loss.

My pleasure and yes 😁

don’t need to be an mba business guru to figure out that there is a bit of shortfall here 🤔

Your offer is of course appreciated! We could (and likely will) have a contribution system similar to what exists now.

So how can we contribute something now to help defray the last of Seb's adventures in "a hole in the water surrounded by hot air" -- is it still the same as the original buy me a coffee thread or what?

So, we have 12 more days. Before we run out of time, what are the options to save the site/community?
