Not that this topic usually gets a lot of attention, but here it is for when something outrageous happens.

Which, you know, never happens in the NFL.

I'll start by saying I was sure I wasn't going to like the new kickoff rule, but so far I haven't seen any problem with it.

The term "dynamic kickoff" is amusing though. It makes me expect to see a little Apple-style black island appear at one end of the football field.

Still, it's better than having a notch in the end zone.

The name is false advertising; it‘s not very dynamic. But it should result in fewer injuries, especially head injurIes, so that’s worth it.

KC and Baltimore look like they picked up right where they left off last year. Philly and Green Bay had a slower start, but Saquon Barkley make a huge difference for the Eagles. Both games were entertaining, so the season might be ok. That being said, they started with 4 of the top teams in the league. I’m not expecting that level of play every week.

That was a pretty good game, even though Baltimore was playing from behind the whole time.

They say football is a game of inches. That one certainly was. Baltimore almost pulled off the win, but in the end it was decided by one inch.

The Buffalo Bills got off to a poor start, allowed the league’s first “dynamic kickoff” touchdown return, but overcame those mistakes to start the season with a win! They didn’t appear to be at the same level as the Ravens or KC. So hopefully they improve as the season goes along.

Sunday morning quarterbacking…

Is Tua finished? Nobody’s saying it for sure, but it’s kind of looking that way. I hate seeing a good quarterback sidelined relatively early in his career, but three concussions in two years…the cumulative effect can’t be good.

Yeah, this latest one is his fault for not sliding as every quarterback is taught to avoid tackles, but boy does this put Miami in a bad position. Best to have him call it a career and have the team move on.

Tua Tagovailoa is dealing with another concussion. What we know and what happens next

Meanwhile, it looks like the Browns may…may have found a way out of that disastrous DeShaun Watson trade.

If it’s true that Watson did not inform the team of this latest allegation, he may have violated the terms of his contract and that gives the Browns an out.

I hope so. What the press isn’t mentioning much is that Cleveland’s offensive line is not at full strength now. Still, Watson’s performance was abysmal. And everyone is just tired of the ongoing moral-legal turmoil that the man brings to the table. QB has rarely been a strong position for Cleveland, but I really hope they can cut bait already. Two more years of this guy? No, please no.

Browns need Deshaun Watson exit strategy fast. And why on earth are they playing him?

As a Bills fan, I was watching the game where Tua got hurt. He ran headfirst into Damar Hamlin, who clearly looked like he was trying to take him down easy. Whether out of compassion or just avoiding a penalty (hitting a QB hard often results in a penalty in the NFL), he is not the reason that Tua got hurt. I feel terrible for him anyway, he might have to quit the sport for his own health.

If not for the sadness of that injury, I would have been 100% joyful about how well the Bills played, easily defeating a team that was in the top 10 last season.

Weird Browns-Jaguars game. The Browns came out looking like world beaters on the first couple of drives, then they almost "penaltied" themselves out of a victory. This is the second week of such sloppy discipline, and there was a lot of it last year too. 🤨

In a similar story, the Bengals snatched defeat from the jaws of victory today. They’d be in a winning position, then screw it up, over and over and over… Even when they had KC 4th and 16 with just seconds left, a defensive player took a dumb penalty to allow them into field goal range. It would have normally only allowed KC to tie, but the Bengals’ kicker missed an easy extra point earlier! So a walk-off winning field goal for KC instead.

At 1-6, I thought for sure the Cleveland Browns were gonna get smoked by the Ravens today. However the Browns’ backup QB, Jameis Winston, brought his A game and pulled off the win in a thriller. It was a pleasure to see Lamar Jackson throw down his helmet in anger as the Old Browns got beat by the New Browns. 😎

Bittersweet day, though, as the Browns’ radio announcer and TV sports reporter for 25 years, Jim Donovan, succumbed to leukemia yesterday. The guy was just a bundle of enthusiasm and was fun to listen to.

I was worried the Bills would lose to the Seahawks today. They are a very good team and the game was on the west coast.

I guess I had no reason to worry, as Buffalo easily beat Seattle. It looks like another great season for the Bills, but KC is undefeated, and they’ve been able to keep the Bills (and everybody else) at bay the last few years as they keep collecting Super Bowl trophies. Oh well, I will keep my hope alive! 🤞

LOL. I’m watching Tampa Bay vs Kansas City on MNF and I said to Mrs. Veil, “Watch for the obligatory shot of Taylor Swift within the next five minutes.” Thirty seconds later there she is! 😆

CeeDee Lamb and I were on the same team yesterday.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones launches angry tirade after question about curtains to block the sun

Jones can get angry and shout until he’s blue in the face, but I watched that game yesterday, and I asked myself how in the world any receiver was supposed to see where the football was. Which was followed up by the question, who in the world would set up a football stadium in an east to west orientation?

That’s gotta be one of the dumber things I’ve seen in sports.

Speaking of dumb…anybody see the Ravens-Bengals game last Thursday night?

The Bengals were behind 35-28, and with only seconds left, Joe Burrow led the Bengals down the field to score a touchdown and make the game 35-34.

Then came the trouble. I saw the coach, Zac Taylor hold up two fingers. He was eschewing the almost certain extra point that would send the game into overtime, in favor of a much less sure 2-point attempt that would outright win the game.

And guess what? A few seconds left, and TE Tanner Hudson dropped the ball in the end zone. And that was all she wrote.

Hudson didn’t lose the game for them, though. Hubris did.

Every day game I’ve seen at JerryWorld has that same problem. Granted, it affects both teams, but the design is just dumb.

That’s a tough call to be honest. Put It all one one play, or take your chances with a coin toss in overtime? Last week, Tampa had the chance to beat KC. They had unstoppable momentum on offense it seemed, and had a chance to choose the 2-point play or go to OT. They chose the latter, KC won the coin toss, and KC easily scored against their exhausted defense.

IMO, the Bengals game was lost earlier, when they had two separate occasions of 3rd and short. Both times, their flashy QB decided to throw it deep. So they went on 4th and long… and he did the same thing. Both times. Any other choices there and they’d have been ahead, not behind, at the end.

Even on the 2-point play in question, the QB decided to pass on the one-on-one matchup with his best receiver, and tried to get tricky and sneak it to a tight end that was double-covered. Joe Burrow, he of the fur coats and frosted hair, is the real ego problem in Cincy…

At the risk of sounding anti-Christian, I’d like to see more athletes respond to a question from a sideline reporter with a relevant sports related answer, not something about how God makes all things possible.

Reporter: asks question about the game.
Player: responds with a commercial for Jesus.

Okay, this is weird. On TNF, it’s snowing to beat the band and the field is getting covered, and Amazon is using camera tricks to “reverse” the image of the field so it looks like black yard lines on white grass.

Only problem is, it looks like the lines are superimposed on top of the players. If you pinch to zoom you’ll see what I mean.

Pretty odd to watch.

It’s a cool effect at first glance, but it leaves a lot of weird artifacts on the screen. I don’t think it’s worth it.

It went from no snow to a whiteout really quick.

As for the game? Browns had a 2-TD lead, but took multiple penalties on the last drive. Feels like they could find a way to blow it…
