The 2024 NFL thread

I will be in mourning again until September. Then I’ll get my hopes up all over again! Great season for the Bills, they exceeded expectations considerably, but weren’t quite good enough to make the Super Bowl this time. Honestly, they actually probably were good enough, because there were some super close calls in the game, down to an inch here or there that made the difference. It came down to a bit of luck. Last week the Ravens Tight End dropped a pass at the end. This time the Bills Tight End dropped one. It happens…

Not interested in this Super Bowl game, not at all.
You got robbed.

KC caught a huge break when the refs didn't agree on the spot of the ball on that 4th and 1 try by the Bills.

Was there a play when a Bills player caught a ball and a KC player grabbed it as they were falling to the ground, was it the KC guy who was awarded possession? I questioned this because the Bills player had both hands on it, but near the ground the KC guy got his hands on it. My inclination was to say the Bills player caught it and it became dead when they hit the ground. 🤔

In the NFL, simultaneous possession goes to the offense. So the ruling was correct in that sense. However, the ball hit the ground, so it should have simply been ruled incomplete.

It is a moot point now, but was even moot in that moment because the refs threw a flag against Buffalo on that play anyway. It only would have made a difference of a few yards, and KC would have kept possession of the ball, whether it was ruled an interception or incomplete instead of the (IMO incorrect) ruling of a catch by the offense.

The NFL seemingly changes the rules of what a "catch" is from week to week.

While I think the refs got it wrong, that's why it's never good to only make it by an inch. If they were a yard past the line, it wouldn't have been an issue.

But the ground didn't cause it to move in his hands so it's considered a completion.

As I said, they change the rules constantly. It used to be if it hit the ground, it wasn’t a catch. Used to be if you were forced out of bounds, you didn’t need to keep both feet in. Used to be you didn’t need to make a “football move” after getting 2 feet when making the catch. Never used to be a rule about “‘completing the process” as you fall to the ground when making a catch.

Like I said, the rules are constantly changing.

They make it up as they go along, and if people get mad about it, they change it a year or two later.

I was rooting for Philly, so naturally I was happy with the result. The Eagles made the Chiefs look incompetent.

Only two disappointments: that final score makes the game look closer than it was, and Trump didn’t get booed out of the dome. But then it’s the South. 😒

I was surprised to read this morning that online reaction to the graphics I mentioned earlier was largely negative.

One last thing: best year for Super Bowl commercials in a long time.

Lots of great cracks on Bluesky about the game…
  • Chiefs lost because of DEI.
  • Chiefs just needed to find 11,000 points.
  • Chiefs would have been declared the winner if Mike Pence had the guts.

Considering the price of tickets, it probably had more to do with the wealth of the attendees. I highly doubt many people who live in New Orleans were at the game.

As for the game? All I can say is, why didn’t KC lay an egg two weeks ago?!

I get you. 🫤

It reminds me that one of the announcers yesterday (probably Brady) made reference to how the Eagles played last week.

The Eagles didn't play last week.

Tom Brady was very good at football. He is a disaster when it comes to announcing a football game.

Think of how many years Erin Andrews has been a sports reporter. She’d be 100x better than Brady, but they will put a blathering egotistical idiot in there before a woman.

An interesting graphic/statistic was mentioned during the game, that said 10 years ago the average player weighed 245 lb, and now it’s up to 330 lb. I have to wonder if this increased weight reduces the viable length of the career of the football linemen, and maybe their lives? Saw a KC guy leave the game early with a brace on his knee. You get bigger, but do your bones or your heart, to support the extra bulk? I’m thinking no. 🤔

In the only video I saw of frump he was getting booed.

I thought the commercials were pretty weak. But I can honestly say i wasn't paying that much attention to them.

One commercial that bugged me was for T-Mobile, proudly announcing their new Starlink service.

I have T-Mobile. And that made me feel dirty.

He got a few boos at the Daytona 500 as well... lol
