The Mandatory Police Violence Thread

This is crazy, but not just for the lead

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A teenager who video-recorded his mother’s forceful arrest by Louisiana sheriff’s deputies in 2020 has been awarded $185,000 by a federal jury in a lawsuit filed over one deputy’s attempt to interfere with the recording.

It's WHY the arrest was happening

De’Shaun Johnson was 14 when deputies arrived at his family’s home in St. Tammany Parish to question his mother, Teliah Perkins, about allegations she had ridden a motorcycle without a helmet — a charge her attorneys said was baseless and that was never prosecuted.

The confrontation turned physical, and video showed the woman being forced to the ground.

A lawsuit against the deputies was filed by the American Civil Liberties Union and the law firm of Reid Collins & Tsai as part of the ACLU’s Justice Lab project, aimed at addressing allegations of police abuses.

Riding without a helmet is something you charge AT THE TIME, or you better have video proof. ALSO, what's the penalty for riding without a helmet in LA? $50!!!

A federal appeals court largely sided with the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office on many of the allegations, squelching much of the lawsuit over the deputies’ use of force. But it allowed the litigation to continue over allegations that one deputy interfered with Johnson’s use of his phone to film the arrest. The ACLU said the deputy stepped in front of Johnson when he began recording the arrest and threatened Johnson with a Taser.
On May 1, after a federal court civil trial in New Orleans, a jury said evidence showed Deputy Ryan Moring’s actions constituted “intentional infliction of emotional distress” and awarded the teen $185,000.

“We are thrilled to see justice served for De’Shaun,” Nora Ahmed, the ACLU of Louisiana’s legal director, said in a news release after the verdict.

The jury voted in the deputy’s favor on an accompanying issue, rejecting a finding that Moring violated Johnson’s First Amendment rights by blocking Johnson from continuing to film his mother’s arrest.

Just in case you thought the police couldn't be enough of a dick in all of this...

The Sheriff’s Office didn’t immediately respond to a phone message seeking comment. But Sheriff Randy Smith, through a spokesperson, told The Times-Picayune/The New Orleans Advocate that an appeal of the verdict against Moring was planned, calling the emotional harm finding “meritless.”

All the shit the police could be doing, and they are investigating allegations of someone riding without helmet

During Austin’s BLM protests in July 2020, Daniel Perry drove into a crowd of protesters. He claimed that Garrett Foster had an ak-47 pointed at him so he shot him “in self defense.” (The convicted murderer was military, not police, but I figured this thread is close enough.)

A few problems with that… the most obvious being that he put himself in the situation intentionally… AND they found prior text messages indicating he fantasized about killing BLM protesters.

A jury found him guilty of murder, but Greg Abbott wants to show those evil BLM people and the evil jury who’s boss by pardoning him immediately.

The message is that anybody can drive into a crowd and murder protesters with impunity? As long as those protesters oppose the governor’s political views?

UPDATE: It‘s official: free pardons if you murder political opponents of the governor of Texas.

PS - The governor specifically restored this murderer’s right to own firearms. I wonder if they also handed him a list of other political opponents he wants murdered. 🤔

Yeah, this is fucked up even from abbott.

Man I am not sure Mexico would even take Texas back if we offered to pay shipping. Talk about rogue states.

4 security guards for a hotel in Milwaukee killed D’Vontaye Mitchell. As of this morning, police are recommending homicide charges. The video seems to prove that even rent-a-cops either learned nothing from the death of George Floyd … or just don’t care.

There are a couple things I never understood about NYC.

1. Why do the citizens always pick terrible, right-leaning mayors?
2. Why do the police matter more than the citizens?

Case in point:

Chair of Police Oversight Board removed by NYC Mayor

The interim head of an independent civilian police oversight board in New York, who had criticized the Police Department and had sought more investigative power and funding for the agency, resigned on Monday after being forced out by Mayor Eric Adams.

The chairwoman, Arva Rice, was asked in April to resign from the panel, the Civilian Complaint Review Board, by Philip Banks III, the deputy mayor for public safety. The request came after she criticized police officials for delaying an investigation into the fatal shooting of a Bronx man by failing to turn over evidence in a timely manner.

Ms. Rice, who also serves as president and chief executive of the New York Urban League, has led the board since the mayor installed her in February 2022, when he called her a “champion for equity and justice.” Her resignation will take effect on Aug. 15.

They killed congestion pricing because cops didn’t want to pay it, and now they are removing the head of the oversight board because… she was apparently DOING HER JOB.

I actually do ❤️ NY, but goodness gracious, imagine how much better it would be with even an AVERAGE mayor and police department,

I think in fairness, for some the mayor was a bit of a swerve. For some they thought voting for the dem would get them a dem in spirit, not name.

He's since spent his time getting raked over the coals, so I think he's got to play to certain people if he thinks he's going to be mayor again.

Sonya Massey was murdered by a police officer in Springfield, IL after calling 911 for help.

^Article link^

Her ”crime” was getting a pot off the stove after engaging in a peaceful conversation with the officer. There was zero provocation, you can watch the video on YouTube, but it‘s painful to watch.

Is that one of the job requirement, assholes with no hesitation to murder minorities asking for help?? /s 🤬

Too many wanted a cop after crime was overhyped. And too many wouldn't/won't vote for a woman. We had two viable, capable women near the top of the heap. But I think too many are just scared or dead-set against a woman as mayor. Let's see if either of them run again. Personally, I wouldn't waste my time. So far, two men have announced their campaign. One has low name recognition and the other's name is associated with alleged SH/SA. And of course, Andrew Cuomo is hinting at a possible run. 🙄

I'm going to study every candidates police policy. There needs to deep cleaning of that 💩 💩 💩 department.

This makes me think of VP Harris as well. For her to be elected, she had to be "tough on crime" because the GOP fear-mongers every election. Her policies over the years show that she is not, on the whole, perpetuating an unfair justice system. However, there is just enough there for those on the left to be fooled into thinking she is a cop, which makes her the enemy.

It tells you just how pervasive and effective the "tough on crime" strategy works in politics. We are humans, but humans are still animals, and we react disproportionately to fear.

Seeing a trend?

If you’re sending your packages via FedEx, beware. The State of Indiana could be seizing them without any warrant or probable cause.

According to a lawsuit filed by the Institute for Justice, police have been seizing FedEx packages containing cash, and then taking the cash under civil asset forfeiture.

Civil asset forfeiture is a process by which police can take anything suspected of being involved in a crime without a warrant or conviction, and then keep the loot for themselves.

In this case, it’s happening at the nation’s second-largest FedEx hub, located at the Indianapolis International Airport. Police dogs sniff packages and flag those expected to contain cash. Officers then remove the tape, rummage through the package and take the cash for themselves if they find any. Ostensibly, the police can do so because they perceive the cash is connected with a crime, even if no actual crime is identified.
This isn’t crime fighting. It’s an actual crime — a blatant, naked theft carried out by uniformed officers.

Indiana law requires any assets seized in a civil forfeiture case to go directly to the school fund — likely to mitigate the moral hazard and incentive to steal citizens’ assets — but little money is actually going to that fund. Instead, police departments are keeping it for themselves, and a 2019 Indiana Supreme Court case upheld that, allowing police, prosecutors or private lawyers contracted to carry out the cases to keep a minimum of 90%.

Indiana, by the way, is the only state that allows prosecutors to contract out asset forfeiture cases to private attorneys, who then can get a cut of the proceeds.

Police beat up a 52-year-old man for the crime of…

Calling the police to report a kidnapping. Bonus: he lost his job when his employers saw video of cops detaining him.

Darnay Cockrell called authorities for help, but he was instead handcuffed and forced to the ground by responding officers. The audio and bodycam footage from the Aug. 6 incident has been released to the public, and in response, Cockrell is facing consequences.

The Arizona father alleged his daughter was kidnapped by her mother, Nicole Conner-Sharp, who he says is a drug addict, per the Daily Mail. According to him, Conner-Sharp came to Cockrell’s apartment to visit their daughter, but then, she took off with the child without permission.

His daughter was returned to him within the hours, but the consequences of the now-viral incident took greater affect later. In the footage, Cockrell can be seen wearing a company T-shirt. After the video was posted to Instagram, Cockrell’s job got wind of the exchange, and he was fired, according to ABC15.

😡😡🤬🤬

The Fraternal Order of Police (yes the organization that just had an event for Trump) are defending the officer who murdered Sonya Massey.

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WICS) — The Illinois Fraternal Order of Police Labor Council filed a grievance saying former Deputy Sean Grayson was terminated “without just cause.”

The FOP is seeking reinstatement, reimbursement of all lost wages, and restoration of all benefits for Grayson.

🤬

Florida’s legislators (and Ron DeSantis who signed this) are convinced that police can do no wrong. They are so certain of this, that they did this:

After more than 20 years of reviewing citizen complaints of police misconduct, the City of Miami’s Civilian Investigative Panel (CIP) faces imminent closure.

The independent oversight board, made up of 13 volunteer panelists and an office of professional staff, was informed this week by the city’s administration that it would no longer be funded. Without funding, the CIP will cease to exist at the end of September.
“We were informed by city officials earlier this week that they would not be funding us for the next fiscal year, thus dissolving our department, the Civilian Investigative panel,” Rodney Jacobs Jr., executive director of the CIP, told WLRN.

This comes after the Florida Legislature passed a law that prohibits cities or “political subdivisions” from creating independent bodies to investigate complaints against law enforcement officers.

That’s right. The state government doesn’t just protect police. It makes it illegal for cities to even TRY and hold them accountable.

I guess the previous post about Miami’s unaccountable cops was prophetic. This morning, a black man was taken down by multiple police officers, pinned to the ground, and handcuffed for a traffic violation, right near Hard Rock Stadium (where the NFL’s Miami Dolphins play).

Normally. I’m guessing the cops would get away with this since they didn’t kill or permanently injure him. But I guess they didn’t realize the man’s fame.

Tyreek Hill is an all-star wide receiver, quite possibly the Dolphins’ best player. It seems that during this violent encounter, nearby fans may have recognized him as a world-class athlete, and the cops got worried and let him go. As Tyreek himself said after the game, what if those bystanders hadn’t recognized him?

“‘What if I wasn’t Tyreek Hill?’ Like worst-case scenario. It’s crazy.”

The only legal authority remaining to investigate these cops is their own Internal Affairs department. In this case, the national embarrassment might lead to them actually doing something about it. But it’s ONLY because Tyreek is famous. Otherwise, do you think we would even learn about such an incident? They acted like this was just their SOP for any traffic stop involving a black man,

PS - I just read that fellow player Calais Campbell (also black) came over to ask the cops what they were doing. They handcuffed him too. 🤬
