Today’s Shooting (an ongoing topic to discuss)

Hard to know what to think or how many grains of salt to take this news with knowing that ISIS loves to claim responsibility for all kinds of things, including that which they have nothing to do with. But it's also a feasible explanation.

Seems like there were warnings about an impending attack from ISIS issued by the U.S. embassy in Russia as well as other Western embassies. Americans were advised to stay away from large gatherings, including concerts. Putin dismissed the warnings as needless fear-mongering.

Did the U.S. know this attack was coming? And people wonder why conspiracy theories arise...

Agree with your general skepticism. That said, the timing with the veto seems just too good for it to be accidental.

The Supreme Court has decided that it’s unconstitutional to ban bump stocks, which turn semi-automatic rifles into machine guns.

For those who don’t recall, this ban was made by Trump. Also, recall that a bump stock is what allowed the Vegas shooter to fire over 1,000 bullets into a crowd in 10 minutes, killing 60 of them.

Even Trump is not enough of a gun nut for this insane Supreme Court. The next Congress needs to impeach and/or increase the number of justices to 13.

Fun note: the illustrations used in the Court’s opinion were provided by a pro-gun lobbying group, the Firearms Policy Foundation.

They aren’t even pretending to be even-handed. They know the only way they can be stopped is if the House goes democratic, and the Senate gets 60 democrats. And they are making sure that can never happen with all the gerrymandering.

There was a shooting in Butler, PA today. Too soon to talk about gun control? Biden was trying to ban AR-15s, one of which was used today.

Thoughts and Prayers, I guess. Trump says guns aren’t the issue, so…
Multiple people saw the shooter climbing on a roof carrying a rifle yesterday and he was killed within seconds of the shooting. This perpetrator was not the sharpest tool in the shed. Which does take us to why every idiot having access to a large weapon.

On the way to Charlottesville. I talked with a friend who is a former Chief of Police of the small Virginia town we live in during the academic year. We both said that we wouldn't be surprised if there were assassination attempts on Biden and/or Mango. That the only thing preventing one was fear by potential perps. I told him that if someone is crazy enough, it would be possible. This was Wednesday.

And after Butler, PA, I'm not sure this will be the end of attempts. If anything, Biden must be provided extraordinary protection going forward. My friend and I both said lax security and boredom will be a great assistant to assassination. It's a miracle that the Butler attempt wasn't successful.

And I don't think this was a fake attempt to rile up Mango's supporters. It's a shame that so many going with that take are self-described progressives/leftists that vow that they will not vote for Biden or will vote 3rd party. This attempt will spur Mango's voters to show up on Election Day. And may persuade some Independents. I'm getting reminders from 2016 (via FB) about my pleas with Dem voters to not overlook the possibility of Hillary losing in November 2016. I was recently telling folk that Mango has a better than 50/50 chance at retaking the White House. Lots still can happen between now and November, but I think Biden-Harris will have an extremely difficult uphill battle and will fall short come November. Especially if voter suppression schemes are not stopped in purple areas/battleground states.

I agree in general but there are some aspects that justify some level of speculation into the motives.
A) Biden is Biden, what he represents nothing truly polarizing or extreme so the impact of martyring him is much less predictable.
B) Trump OTOH would go down in history as a simply horrible idea if he lost this election, but as a martyr of MAGA, if he'd get killed. So him being shot would solidify the MAGA movement forever with a net gain.
C) Based on the early eye witness interviews and some of the photos surfacing on reddit/TMZ etc, SS majorly dropped the ball on this. The guy used a ladder to climb up on white roofs carrying an unconcealed large firearm and was noticed by bystanders. To put this in perspective as to how equipped and aggressive SS can be about a presidential detail, I still remember when Trump visited a certain hospital as a president, marksmen were carrying their huge guns around and cell signal was lost for the duration of the visit (I'm still baffled how this was acceptable in a hospital). So considering this, it just seems irregular to me how they didn't monitor the perimeter for this to happen.

Was Trump in on this? Absolutely zero chance. Is it possible that someone conspired to enable this? Definitely.

“They prepare you for these things,” a 15-year-old girl told the New York Times. “But in the moment, I started crying. I got nervous.”

Kids should NOT have to prepare for these things. We could pass laws to stop this from happening, but millions of adults would rather "own the libs" than save the kids. Brian Kemp can go F himself, he is pretending to care right now, but he signed a law in 2022 allowing anybody to carry a gun without a license... and BRAGGED about it.

The anti-regulation gun people, these deaths just roll off them like water off a duck. It’s all about ME, “I’ll tell you about my thought and prayer, but honestly I don’t give a rip about anything gun related unless it‘s about inconveniencing me and my precious. 🤬

I read that they are going to try the 14-year old shooter with mental health issues as an adult. That is going to solve what exactly?

It's the GUNS. Locking up a 14-year-old for life isn't going to fix ANYTHING.

And someday somebody should explain to me how trying children "as adults" became a thing. They can't vote, can't drink, can't smoke, can't do much without parental permission. But we can put them on trial when they commit a crime and pretend they're an adult just for the purposes of that trial? WTF? That makes zero sense.

The AR-15 was a Christmas gift from dad for his 13-year-old kid. AFTER his kid was previously investigated for making threats a few months earlier? Looks like Dad is going to prison for this mass shooting too.

If this SCOTUS continues to refuse to acknowledge that these guns are supposed to be part of a militia, we should just repeal the 2nd amendment entirely.

CNN story on the father of the shooter

I do see a trend that should be elevated systematically and is compatible with any f'n interpretation of the 2A: charging parents who arm their children who commit crimes with said weapons.

Florida, McDonald's, Guns, Ridesharing, a truly American story.

Police then spoke with the Lyft driver, who said Valbrum was allegedly acting "extremely aggressive" while pointing a gun at him, the second juvenile and other members of the group. He also told police that he allegedly saw Valbrum reach inside his car and assault the second juvenile.

After being read her Miranda rights, Valbrum told police that her gun was on her waistband during the incident and it had "accidentally fell," causing it to go off and shoot her daughter, the affidavit stated.

The affidavit also noted that police had watched surveillance and phone video of the incident that showed Valbrum with a gun in her hand while knocking on the rear passenger window of the Lyft. CBS News Miami is attempting to obtain the video.

Not much remorse for shooting her daughter, lying to the cops about it despite being on camera for the entire incident.
