War in the Middle East.

Well, woke up to a cease fire... then immediately accusations of violations from Israel (it all seems a bit confused though) and threats from them to hit Tehran later today. I would imagine we're all thinking that Israel is being lent on heavily to stop as Hesgeth, Vance and the gang don't fancy any more nation building projects after all?
I wouldn't trust any of it. They'll bomb, wait a news cycle with ceasefire then resume bombing. THey seem to be doing the same shit as putin.

edit: they couldn't even wait out the news cycle.

It appears that most/all of 45’s advisors told him to stay out of this.

But as he’s proven before, he values the opinions of other authoritarian leaders above all else.

I swear, we need a separate Karoline Leavitt thread. You know, for all the Leavitty in her press propaganda conferences.

Intelligence sources are now all saying that the attack on Iran was not nearly as successful as Trump said. In fact, the Defense Intelligence Agency report and the battle damage assessment conducted by US Central Command say that we probably did no more than set Iran’s program back a few months.

Enter Baghdad Barb.

“This alleged assessment is flat-out wrong and was classified as ‘top secret’ but was still leaked to CNN by an anonymous, low-level loser in the intelligence community. The leaking of this alleged assessment is a clear attempt to demean President Trump, and discredit the brave fighter pilots who conducted a perfectly executed mission to obliterate Iran’s nuclear program. Everyone knows what happens when you drop fourteen 30,000 pound bombs perfectly on their targets: total obliteration.”

Ooooh. Somebody’s getting pissy.

Let me quote that again and highlight all the manipulative, propagandist, highly suspect language used.

That’s a lot of gaslighting.

Would it have been so hard to just say, “We are reevaluating the results of the attack” and just tell the truth?

It's not war, when you bomb and wait, bomb and wait....

OK, so it looks like it was one and done from the US point of view - well, for the time being anyway. I guess everything can now shift back to shocker that is Gaza, which is coming back onto our news now in all its horror. Where this leaves proliferation in the Middle East now is anybodies guess. With the regime still in place I guess they'll quietly double down on their atomic tinkering and probably make sure that this time it's done right under Tehran city itself. Meanwhile I guess the broader lesson to smaller powers (if they missed the Ukraine memo) is you'd better get yourselves a bomb ASAP and do it as quietly as possible.

Isreal have just hit Hamas in ...Doha....

Good God.

What is the US doing in all this...

A few million Americans decided that Harris wasn’t sufficiently pro-Palestinian. So they skipped the election, benefitting the guy who promised to kick out all the Palestinians and make Gaza a resort.

Our president probably ordered intelligence cooperation for the strike.

The US? Giving it thumbs up.
It's telling about how much the IDF is starting to realize their self-inflicted PR damage by unusual focus on explaining how they "minimized civilian casualties" and sought the blessing of the Don.

If Hezbollah did what the IDF did with the pagers, we'd call it a terror attack. When the IDF did it, they were praised for their ingenuity.

Almost the entire UN walks out before Netanyahu gives his speech. (Sorry have to click through to see the video…)

Righto, we now have a peace deal on the table... In theory that's a great thing and there's lots of talk of parallels with The Good Friday agreement (Tony Blair being involved etc etc) but having looked at it a little beyond the excited headlines I'm left with a question.

What's in it for Hamas? Why should they sign?

Am I missing something?

No, I have the same thoughts. They'll just use this to say that hamas isn't interested in peace. Trump as a peacemaker is like trump as a healthcare reformer. lots and lots talk and hyperbole but always falls short where actual effort and focus is needed from him. At this point, most world leaders figured him out: just wait things out until he gets distracted (usually, a few weeks tops) and then persuade him to assume the opposite position because he won't remember his stance from a few weeks prior.

Well, no deal yet, I guess Hamas disarming is the sticking point. Will Israel compromise on that, or will enough pressure be brought to bear on Hamas for them to concede all influence in the strip? Whatever, this 'war' needs to end.

Edit - Thurs 9th - looks like there's a ceasefire... Now for a reckoning for all sides I guess...

At an event in Israel celebrating the return of hostages, they tried to get the crowd to cheer for Bibi…

Wow, that's an interesting video. It's being widely reported here that Trump is now far more popular than Bibi.

It is great news that the hostages have been released.

I was watching a Times radio interview with Ami Ayalon who made the point that very recent events are first time that the US has decided it wants peace regardless of what the Israeli leadership wants. (I'm certain like the Palestinians your average Israeli just wants all this to end.) Perhaps sometimes the wrong people (Trump) do the right thing for the wrong reasons (a grab at a Noble prize), but perhaps I'm being overly cynical?

But I guess the hard yards and all the complicated detail start tomorrow... Plus, it'll be interesting what the reaction will be when the journalists can finally get into Gaza and traumatised Israeli soldiers start telling their stories...

IMO Bibi was about 30 seconds from being deposed by his citizens who are sick of the war. Trump doesn’t deserve any credit for brokering this deal.

Also, I have to disagree with Mr. Ayalon on this. Jimmy Carter (and other presidents) welcomed Palestinian leaders to talks in the USA. Israeli leaders weren’t always this extreme either. It’s not unprecedented… and this is not peace yet. And it’s not against the will of Israel’s leaders.

TLDR: Bibi is doing this out of self-interest, not because of Trump.

Bibi has videos of him telling people he can make the US do whatever he wants. Biden's most burning critique is that he gave too much of what Bibi wanted without anything of value in return.

Also, after the IDF killed 3% of Gaza's population, murdered a record number of journalists, destroyed the enclave's already poor infrastructure, and starved the population, I wonder how you build lasting peace on a foundation like this. So we got a papier-mâché peace where following the horrific Oct 7th attack (that didn't happen in vacuum), essentially all shots were called by an "ally".

Remember when @TBL was elated about trump's election fixing the war?! Well, chump has owned 9 months of this conflict ( half of it if we consider his machinations around the election), so in this time frame any president could have ended it without the amount of undue credit given to chump.
