What Are You Doing Today?

Taking it easy after coming down with a bit of a bug. It might have been the extra eggs I ate this morning. A bit runny, but I ate them anyway.

After stacking packed boxes for the upcoming move, I spent 2-1/2 hours talking with my good friend D. She's fully retired now, turning down writing and editing gigs while she works on her own manuscripts.

She advised me on a few leads since I'm "semi-retired" and rambled off some creative ideas to her.

Napped and prep dinner so I can have full attention as my Yanks play the 2nd of a three game series against the BoSox tonite.

I’m at a party where there are two unruly dogs who are wearing remote controlled shock collars (unpleasant sound and vibration) to train them not to misbehave, and there’s also a number of kids.

One of the kids asked me, “Why are those dogs wearing collars with blinking lights on them?” and I replied, “Ever seen Suicide Squad”? 🤭

Last night right as we were going to bed, a water line leading to our washing machine broke and spilled water all over our basement. So we spent the hours between midnight and about 1:30 am with a shop vac sweeping it up. Needless to say I was in a foul mood because of the timing.

Finally caught up to email after (mostly) not checking since the last weekend of June since we moved to a new apartment in Virginia. Then came home to our empty NYC house as the in-laws went to Taiwan since my brother in-law is in a diabetic coma. They were expecting a new fridge as the old one was acting up, getting pretty hot. Took care of the redelivery today and setting up and calibrating it. My FIL insisted on a Whirlpool like the last fridge. I wanted to get good reviewed fridge without ice+ water (hate them!) In the process we had to toss several bags of spoiled food. My MIL will be livid when she finds out all precious anchovies, sausages and assorted special ingredients are long gone. I don't care. I think she puts too much crap in the fridge.

Was discussing the Alec Baldwin case with my twin earlier today. Surprised he agreed with me that the prosecutors shouldn't have brought a case and that they were vindictive and incompetent throughout this ordeal. Guess we'll be talking about tonight's Yankees-Orioles game with the benches clearing after a hit batter. We can't stand Baltimore and I know the BS will continue tomorrow. Let's hope Aaron Judge is not a recipient of a bean ball game #2. All hell will break loose if he's targeted. Again.

I started today going out to buy my wife a birthday present and turned around when we got the call that my brother-in-law is in bad shape. He failed a barium swallow test, so that means he can’t eat. He’s in an advanced stage of cancer, and before they bring him home from his latest trip to the hospital they’re determining whether he wants a feeding tube. It’s…not good. ☹️

I am so sorry to hear this news. Your family has certainly had to face a lot of difficult times and hard choices over this past year. 😢

Believe it or not, today was my first trip to the pool. I’ve been begging my wife for two weeks and finally ended up going with other family. Mrs. Veil is apparently going to have to be dragged kicking and screaming.

Wow, and summer's practically on the wane already.. hope things start looking up for you guys.

Things have been...busy.

I mentioned a friend who was terminal with a particularly nasty form of cancer. Well, he passed a week ago and we've been dealing with being supportive to his wife. I've been putting together one of those slide presentations for his memorial service, the kind that shows continuously on a TV.

And now we're talking with a real estate agent about selling my mom's house. She died just a few months ago.

At the same time I'm sick with something resembling The Cold From Hell. It's been going around my family and several of us took Covid tests and it's not that. So at least that's a silver lining.

Coming up on Labor Day weekend is always bittersweet in Catskills communities, as we have a lot of seasonal residents. The rounds of "Where did the summer go??!" exchanges between local and summer residents have already begun. 😢

Some summer folk will stay into October but may still wrap up their veggie gardens early. so they can just schmooze through September with local friends before the hassles of closing up their summer places.

The joy part of that is that the whole area now turns into a movable farmers market, with people doorstepping their own particular excess harvest. So far I have traded six little market-size zucchinis for a nice red cabbage and enough green tomatoes to fry up for two suppers! 😋

Comparing some estimates on making repairs to my mom's house in preparation for selling it. Exciting stuff!

Yesterday, however, I went out with family to a restaurant for lunch. Then we babysat my grandson and decided to make it fun by driving with him to the nearest beach (which is not all that close). He loved it, but by then everyone was hungry so I ended up at a restaurant for the second time that day.

Now, the kid's hilarious. He's both intelligent and good-hearted, so the way he puts things amazes us. He looked at this club sandwich piled high like a Dagwood sandwich, and said that the bread-to-meat ratio was way off. Then he explained how he was looking forward to the three day holiday weekend because he doesn't like going to bed knowing there's school the next day. He says when he climbs into bed and realizes there's no school tomorrow, it fills his heart with so much joy. 😂

Just requested my transcripts from UC Davis so I can apply to a graduate program. Looking to get a Masters in Elementary Education. I was on the fence about going for this, but this is what I want to do and I think is the right step to take.
Elementary ed. is such a necessity and it’s a true selfless service to the community. I applaud your decision and I hope it goes well, and leads to much fulfillment in your life.

Visited my brand new Apple Store. Opening day. Quite crowded; People and staff inside, security guards outside.

The first ”expert” to help me with the MacBooks did not know much about them at all, but to his credit he did know what he did and did not know and went to consult his colleagues rather than giving incorrect answers. He later returned with an English-speaking man who absolutely did know things, and my two questions had been properly relayed to the international veteran. New dude has a bright future there for sure!

It's been a busy day. Moving stuff in the basement in preparation for a badly needed foundation repair. Had a refrigerator repair guy come and take a look at our eight year old fridge. And finished a project at my mom's house getting it ready to sell.
