Television What Are You Watching?

The Residence (Netflix 2025+)
This is a good ensemble story, especially if you like murder mysteries. Brilliant detective Cordelia Cupp investigates murder at the White House. Renewed already, I’m only 3 episodes in, so I don’t know if the murder is solved at the end of 8 episodes.

Torchwood: Miracle Day (Max) is a ten part story that comprises the entirety of S4 of the series.

This time, people all over the world stop dying...which means people in pain from disease or horrible accidents are trapped in unending agony. Not even suicide can kill them.

The consequences quickly pile on. Hospitals do not have staff or space to deal with the suffering, with more of them being added every hour. Resources become scarce as the population increases with no corresponding deaths. And this "miracle" is depicted by some as God's will and by others as a MAGA-like reason to force people into concentration camps.

Of course, there's a conspiracy involved, and part of the problem is that like the entire season, it's too drawn out and too elaborate to be plausible or even keep our attention. It doesn't help that they added some US based characters in an attempt to Americanize what was a uniquely British show set in Wales.

Feels kind of mandatory for Torchwood and Dr. Who fans, but it's clearly not their best work.

Mobland (Netflix 2025-)
Ten episodes in Season 1.
Ok, 4 episodes in, this is good, but I don’t expect it’s for everyone. UK based mob story of a family, The Harrigans led by Pierce Bronson, in the best role I’ve seen him in, Helen Mirren is his wife, souly devoted to power and family. An event involving an irresponsible relative, causes some trouble (understatement 😉). Everyone is aghast, she’s proud.

Fast moving, brutal, coherent if you pay attention and have closed captioning, it’s the accents, can’t catch it all of it. 😇 Tom Hardy’s character as the family fixer is fairly amazing, instead of being a wreck, juggling multiple fires, visibly completely cool in life threatening situations, constant pressure. Joanne Froggatt (Downton Abbey) plays his wife, unhappy playing second fiddle to The Harrigans.

The first thing I’ve seen by Guy Ritchie that I like. 🤔

The Barbary Coast (DVD).

After watching some heavier stuff, and with all the tension in the air IRL, this is decent lightweight summer fare.

William Shatner is a government agent and Doug McClure a casino owner who resolve federal level crimes in the old west. It’s akin to shows like The Rockford Files in terms of action, humor and handsome heroes.

Two of the better gimmicks are McClure, playing a character named Cash Conover, paying off people and saying, “Cash has no enemies”, and people being thrown out of saloons and landing face first in the thick mud. I love running gags.

Great theme song, too.

Trivia surprise: I had to go back and replay the credits, because I couldn’t believe a young bellboy bit part was played by none other than Leslie Moonves, future president of CBS. 😯

Subscribed to Max for 2 months to catch up. The Last of US Season 2 , The Guilded Age Season 2 are on the list. Any suggestions? 🙂

I can’t resist, I am compelled to start Station Eleven. Have you ever been mesmerized by a story? This is post- apocalyptic, but unlike The Walking Dead, this focuses on the positive aspect of humanity, not the dog eat dog aspect. It’s so good. Cinematic art..

Did you ever watch Game of Thrones? Or The Wire? I think they are still streaming on there. As for a newer show: The Rehearsal is a very weird show; I don’t know if you’d like it but if you’re looking for “something completely different” it’s worth a go.

Game of Thrones as short changed as it was, was still great although the end was disappointing… 🙃
