What have you added to your desk, your house, your bag, or transportation, your person?

I added another Echo device the other day – a second Echo Glow. My daughter has one in her room as a night light and to tell her when she's allowed to get out of bed. I now have one on my night stand to use as a wake-up light. Still working on getting the settings right to make sure it ramps up the brightness and color in the morning, but I'm hopeful. It is way too dark during the week when I have to get up for work.

I'm also about to take possession of a 16" M1 Max MacBook Pro from work. It took about 7 weeks from order to arrival through our vendor, and now will take a week or so to set up. I'm the only person working on a Mac and our IT department has almost no experience supporting Macs. I've been using my personal computer basically since I started as they couldn't get the Surface Book they gave me to properly connect to the servers.

  • M1 Ultra Mac Studio
  • Studio Display
  • OWC Thunderbay 4 Thunderbolt 3
Just awaiting on the delivery of the Mac Studio. The wait is killing me!
Oooh. How long to you have to wait?

I'm most interested in the Studio Display, though it is out of my budget. How do you like it so far?

My delivery is estimated April 6-13. I haven't taken the display out of the box yet though. I'm waiting to do the whole thing at once for full awesomeness.

You're a more patient being than I am. Be sure to share your thoughts when you get everything setup.

I’m still trying to decide on wether to get a Mac Studio Base and a Monitor.

Buying it is easy. Trying to explain to the wife - now that’s the issue…

MBP 14", M1PRO/32Gb/2TB.
Iphone 13 Pro (FaceID generally sucks without the watch).
Govee Patio Lights.

To me the screen is totally indifferent. A bit pricey for what it does, but definitely convenient. The actual computer though...that's quite amazing.

I'm quite the laggard since my most recent tech purchase is still my 2020 MacBook Air.

But an upgrade is overdue in iPad department.

Still thinking about what to get. Was not going to order anything during winter anyway, hate it when a courier drops something off on the damn front porch no one has used since the porch was rebuilt 20 years ago (to afford ingress of the piano when I closed my NYC apartment) and before that probably the 1860s. Yet these couriers will slog through snowdrifts to reach an uncleared front porch rather than come around through a shoveled path to the rear deck door, go figure.

Anyway next up either the newest iPad mini or the newest iPad Air, even though I'd also like to have a 5G-capable phone but that can wait.

As for the iPad upgrade color options, the purple is lookin' good to me this time around.

I love the form factor of the new iPad mini. I wanted to get purple when I got mine, but they didn't have it in stock and I didn't feel like waiting. I have read, though, that for the mini, the colorful options are barely colorful; they are very muted in most lighting conditions. I've heard that isn't the case with the new Airs and the colors are much more vibrant.

The old Xbox headphones that I had hooked up to my pc for games broke (headband cracked) , so I bought the Beyerdynamic 100 MX. Very impressive for the price. (y)

Interestingly that Mac has been the only Mac I've been quite unhappy with through and through. It turned laggy, battery life went down to 3 hours, the screen was meh and the sound was distorted like crazy, and it didn't even get the beating my 2014 MBP got, that I used for 6 years and got about 25,000 H of use out of it.

Yeah it's the first MBA I have bought since the original. My immediately previous others were a couple of the tank-like mid-2012 MacBook Pro which I loved best after the old standbys of the previous era, the 12" and 15" G4 powerbooks.

I don't ask a lot of a machine these days though, so I can put up with the noticeable differences in performance. But I definitely expected more of the audio. I mean tbh the audio chip in the godblasted original shuffle, the plastic one that looked like a USB drive? That thing put out quality sound even in the era of MP3 compression. The sound in my 10.5" iPad Pro from 2017 also beats the 2020 MBA. Apple s/b embarrassed but I'm sure they're not.

I still think I got my money's worth on the MBA, but I also think the newer laptops with the M1 are getting out of my range in terms of ability to justify the expenditure for the storage space I like to have on board.

I'm not much on practice of photography, more of an appreciator there, so I have the same problem with the price of iPhones any more. My next one of those likely to be the new SE for that reason, and I'll keep my XR as a WiFi device with more screen real estate for reading books and more of my newspaper subs when I'm not using the laptop or an iPad. I don't travel much now so I really only need a smartphone for texting and 2FA, quick glance at news headlines and weather. And I really like that red SE floating out there now, man. I do want a 5G capable phone because with T-mobile's expansion I'll likely finally have a signal inside the damn house in a year or so.

Looks pretty neat! Never knew BD was making stuff like this.

I'm still amazed by the new MBP. One of the most impressive features is how dim it the screen can go but remain readable. That's something I've had an issue with in all of my Macbooks to date. But this one just does everything better.

YES! But truth be told, my 2017 iPad pro has pretty spectacular speakers and headphone out. So the bar is high/

I largely share you philosophy, especially about the phone. Android is a better OS IMHO, but thanks to the integration with Mac, I don't have to deal with iOS, just few minutes a day. I was planning to keep my Gen2 iphone SE, but it broke, and I got fed up with the poor battery life anyway. I prefer touch ID and I think that tech is pretty mature. I still don't understand landscape mode with FaceID... But the battery life is 2 days easily so I don't need to worry about missing pages on my phone because of a dead battery. The camera is nice, but I have a DSLR for serious stuff.

I just added an Elgato Stream Deck to my setup - and am still configuring the hotkeys (with Keyboard Maestro) and profiles. It feels like the Touch Bar could have been designed and made to work like this, and it might live up to its potential.

That’s one of the reasons I went the MBP route when I bought my last one. I never had good luck with the Airs. But this MBP is almost 5 years old and still works like a charm. It’s probably overkill for my basic needs but at least it doesn’t lag and the battery isn’t horrible yet. I’ll keep it until it’s on its deathbed. I’m not sure what I’ll do next because the new Pros are expensive. Not sure I wanna pay what they’re charging now.
