What's your latest tech purchase?

It’s not really a purchase, it was a Christmas gift, but I’m getting acquainted with Ring Video Doorbell. I would’ve preferred something HomeKit compatible, but a gift is a gift.

I have not tried it, but if I were you I would have a look at Homebridge to possibly add HomeKit support.

Yeah, homebridge sounds tempting, but it takes us to your motto: "S in IoT stands for security."

I've had an original mesh router setup where the homekit devices are firewalled off, and I also exclusively have my WIFI-connected smart devices on the guest network, so they don't directly access networked hard drives (which I don't even have anymore since my beloved timecapsules went defunct).

@Thomas Veil
I have a logitech doorbell, which is weird on its own. I connected it thru a transformer to a chime (it was a major pain in the ass to install). You can also connect your Ring to an alexa Echo and you can just use it as a doorchime. We also inherited an Arlo Essentials doorbell with the house which is a POS. It requires a hub to be able to connect to Homekit but needs a subscription for cloud recording, etc. The logi doorbell has excellent picture and reliability but horrid mic (which I don't mind). The Arlo had gotten disconnected all the time, which is super annoying. However, its mic was so good, I could hear conversations in pristine quality from down the corner. It was really creepy.

Got myself a cheap Zyxel GS1200-5 5-port (barely) managed gigabit switch and 5x10 meters cheap cat 5e ethernet cables to play around a bit more with the previously mentioned second hand mesh-thingamajigs before committing and donating my current Ubiquitis to my brother-in-law.

So far so good, devices on the new wi-fi perform about half as good as wired devices (around 50% speed and 200% latency) throughout the apartment. Pretty nice upgrade, especially considering the low cost. Promising! Hopefully stable over time as well, time will tell.

The new cheap switch works but leaves a bit to be desired when it comes to security…

I mean, seriously? Max 15 characters? No symbols? Ah, well, bought it for lab purposes, not for deployment in an environment where hackers are to be expected, but still…

Amen to that.

My cameras are all wired, confined to their own VLAN without access to anything else, no Internet, no local networks. The firewall only allows them to respond to requests from my local proxy/aggregator. Homebridge would be trivial for me to add to the mix but… you know.

Most other “smart home” devices get to share a dedicated VLAN and SSID with controlled Internet access but cameras are just too invasive for my taste. I simply don’t trust the manufacturer to not having left backdoors by “accident” or gaping security holes due to incompetence.

Absolutely. Our only camera inside is in the kids' room, and that will come off too once they consistently sleep through the night and require no bedtime reading. (Boy, our bedtime routine is still like an hour and a half and we still read them about an hour a night...one of the most torturous things in my adult life is reading half asleep in a dimly lit room).

Had a some FSA money left that would have been lost if not spent by end of 2023, so we got this belt. Pretty good, I do have chronic (mild) lower back pain ever since my last growth spurt. I've been doing voltaren gel on my sore muscles followed by this heat/massage belt. It's at least as good as a nice hot shower.
